Around 20,000 BC, people in the islands of the South Pacific were the first to discover sugar in giant grass (which we call sugar cane) that grew naturally in their area.
This section is dedicated to the needs of Educators and Students.
CSI works with health professionals and educators to develop educator
and student materials about the role of sugars and carbohydrates
in a healthy diet, including energy balance and fuelling for physical
activity. Information is also available in a cross-curriculum context,
guiding visitors through an exploration of the sugar industry in
Canada, sugar cane and sugar beet production, food chains, photosynthesis,
