ABOUT US

Trade Alliances

To meet the CSI's trade policy objectives, CSI collaborates with like-minded Canadian and international organizations supporting the need to improve access to export markets.

Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance

CSI is a founding member of the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA), a coalition of national and regional organizations, associations and companies that support a more open and fair international trading environment for agriculture and agri-food. Members include producer organizations, processors, marketers and exporters from the major trade-reliant sectors in Canada. Together, CAFTA members account for almost 80% of Canada's agriculture and agri-food exports; conduct about $40 billion in business annually; employ close to 500 thousand Canadians directly in production, processing and marketing; and account for more than half of Canada's farm cash receipts.

CAFTA's activities in Canada and internationally focus on the World Trade Organization (WTO) trade negotiations. CAFTA is seeking an outcome in the current round of negotiations (The Doha Round) that results in meaningful, progressive reductions in trade-distorting protection and support, with a particular focus on the framework of market access, export competition and domestic support.

Canadian Sugar Beet Producers

CSI collaborates with the Canadian Sugar Beet Producers' Association (CSBPA) to seek a fair domestic and international trading environment. The only sugar beet grown in Canada for domestic use is in southern Alberta; therefore, the Alberta Sugar Beet Growers are the sole remaining member of CSBPA. Alberta Sugar Beet Growers is a farmer organization striving to create an Alberta sugar beet industry that is vibrant, expanding, profitable and producer driven. Rogers Sugar contracts with sugar beet growers in Alberta to encourage continued high quality production and increased acreage of beets to supply the beet processing facility in Taber, Alberta.

Global Alliance for Sugar Trade Reform and Liberalisation

The Global Alliance for Sugar Trade Reform and Liberalisation (Global Sugar Alliance -- GSA) is seeking positive, progressive and meaningful reform of sugar policies globally. The GSA believes that the WTO negotiations offer the unique opportunity to achieve substantial subsidy reductions, improvements in market access and thus a less distorted world sugar economy to boost trade, jobs and prosperity. The GSA supports an integrated approach to the three pillars of trade policy - market access, domestic support and export subsidies - addressing and linking them in a single undertaking with commitments implemented on a product-by-product basis. Within this framework, sugar must be treated equitably and fairly along with all other products/commodities.

National Sugar Caucus

The all-party National Sugar Caucus was founded in December 1994, as MPs and Senators from all parties became concerned about unfair U.S. trade practices adversely affecting jobs in the Canadian sugar and sugar-containing products industries. Since then, the Sugar Caucus has been a strong voice for the Canadian industry, growers and employees. Sugar Caucus activities are focused on addressing the trade imbalance with the US and other countries. The Caucus encourages government action to prevent unfair regional trade agreements while promoting new export opportunities in the US and other highly protected markets.

The current chair of the Sugar Caucus is Rick Casson MP (Lethbridge, Alberta).
